Bio

Aaron Hedland enters his 2nd year as assistant coach for the Beach Volleyball team and it will be his 11th year as Women's Volleyball team

Hedland began his Moorpark College coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach with the Women’s Volleyball program in 2010, becoming the Raiders’ assistant women’s volleyball coach in 2011 and head men’s coach in 2014. Hedland has proudly served as an assistant to the women’s program under head coaches Steve Burkhart and Adam Black.

As Head Men's Volleyball coach, Hedland guided the Raiders to their first CCCAA post-season appearance in 2019 since Moorpark’s most previous trip in 2012 and was on track to do so again in 2020 before season was cut short due to COVID-19. Under Hedland, the Raiders finished Western States Conference North co-Champions in 2017-their second WSC title in school history and first since 2005—and have finished ranked in the CCCMVCA State Coaches’ Poll Top 10 in each of the last four seasons, climbing higher each season.

Off the court, the Raiders have been just as strong in the classroom under Hedland’s instruction, helping over fifty student athletes transfer on to four-year institutions. In 2014, the team was named CCCAA State Scholar Team. More recently, in 2016 and 2018, Raiders Men’s Volleyball earned WSC Men’s Scholar Team honors.

Before being cut short, the 2020 season saw the Raiders atop the state in several statistical categories, including hitting percentage (.314), solo blocks (72), total blocks (111), blocks per set (2.85), and points per set (16.8). Most importantly, in 2020, the Men’s Volleyball program saw ten of its student-athletes transfer on to four-year institutions, six of which to continue their collegiate volleyball careers.

Growing up a Ventura County native, Hedland played and coached for some of the area’s most successful volleyball programs. Hedland has been extremely active with the coaching at the youth club level over the last 12 years, working with local clubs such as Sports Academy Volleyball Club (formerly Mamba Sports Academy), Ventura County Volleyball Club, Bones Volleyball Club, and California Heat VBC. He also served as the men’s head coach for San Diego State University’s men’s club volleyball team as well as an assistant for Westlake High School’s boys’ team.

As a coach, Hedland’s coaching accolades include 2017 WSC-N Coach of the Year (Moorpark College Men’s), 2017 WSC-N Conference Champions (Moorpark College Men’s), 6-time WSC Conference Champions (Moorpark College Women’s), 2014 USAV BJNC – U18 Club division silver medalist (VCVC), 2013 SCVA Boys Junior Classic – U16 bronze medalist (Bones VC), and multiple Top 4 CIF-SS finishes (Westlake High School). Hedland also inherited from Steve Burkhart the role of host and director of the Ventura County High School Volleyball All-Star games since 2013.

He is a graduate of Westlake High School, playing for their two-time Marmonte League champion (2003, 2004) and Division I CIF finalist (2004) volleyball team. Hedland then studied and was a letterman at Moorpark College and UC San Diego, receiving All-Western States Conference and Scholar Athlete honors. Hedland received bachelor’s degrees in history and sociocultural anthropology from UCSD in 2010 where he also received scholar athlete honors. He has since received two master’s degrees in coaching and athletic administration and exercise sciences from Concordia University, Irvine.

Hedland currently lives in Moorpark with his fiancé and Raider volleyball alum, Cindy.
