Softball defeats Cuesta to take top spot in WSC North standings

MOORPARK, CA - The Raiders softball team had busy week, playing four games this past week which included two WSC North contests and ending with a non-conference double-header. 

The Raiders opened the week with a 5 inning 9-0 win over LA Pierce, which set-up a match-up with Cuesta. Both the Raiders and Cougars came into the game tied atop WSC North standings at 6-0 and the Raiders defeated the Cougars, 8-0 to claim the top spot after the first round of WSC action. 

To close out the week, the Raiders hosted Central Valley's Portervile for a double-header and the Raiders took both games, 8-0 in 5 innings and 16-0 in 5 innings. 

In the Pierce game, the Raiders exploded for 6 runs in the 3rd. Ashlyn Olson opened the inning reaching base on E7. Next batter, Mia Gregory singled. Two on, no outs. Mallory Akhlaghi  walked, loading the bases. Next Raider batter Danielle Bishop tripled to left center, clearing the bases; Leah Cowans RBI single scores Bishop. Two batters later, Maddy Mekari hit a 2 run homerun to finish the scoring. In the bottom of the 5th, Cowans led off with a single followed by Isabella Velaquez's RBI single. Next batter Maddy Mekari hit her second 2 run homerun to end the game, 9-0. Amanda Smith struck out 8 and faced one over the minimum to get the win.

The Raiders opened the Cuesta game pushing a run across in the top of the 1st. Taytem Reyes walked, advanced to second on a pass ball. Mallory Ahklaghi grounder pushed Reyes to 3rd and Danielle Bishop sac fly scored Reyes. The score stayed 1-0 through four innings. In the top of the 5th, Ahklaghi walked and Bishop singled, two on, 1 out. Next batter, Isabella Velasquez 3 run homerun pushed the score t 4-0. The Raiders were not done. Maddy Mekari single was followed by Leah Cowan's homerun. The Raiders added two insurance runs in the top of the 7th on Mekari's 2 run homerun, 8-0 Raiders. Amanda Smith only allowed two hits to get the win.

In the first game against Porterville, the Raiders scored 8 in the second and that's all the Raiders needed as Amanda Smith kept the Pirates guessing at the plate to get the win. 

In game two, the Raider continued their hot hitting. Alexa Paradis went 3 for 4 with 2 homeruns and 9 RBIs. Kylie Kolkowski homered. Mallory Ahklaghi went 2 for 2 with a double and 2 RBIs. Taytem Reyes and Leah Cowans also doubled.

The Raiders are now 19-6 overall, 7-0 in WSC North action and have won 11 staright.

Next up, the Raiders begin the 2nd round of WSC North hosting Santa Monica on Tuesday, 4/2 at 2:30p. Then Oxnard on Thursday, 4/4, 2:30p. Then another non-conference double-header, hosting Citrus on Saturday, 4/6, 12p and 2:00p
