MC football falls just short to Santa Barbara on Sophomore night

These sophomores have been through a lot, and they gave it everything they had Saturday night, too.

The Moorpark College football team fell just short in its last home game of the season to Santa Barbara, 27-24, on sophomore night.

Sometimes, the scoreboard isn't everything. That was one of those times, as 13 sophomores were honored for three years with the program, including a COVID-19 season with no football and riddled with uninspiring Zoom meetings.

Quarterback Trae Johnson threw for 187 yards on 16 of 36 passing for two touchdowns and two interceptions. Arcelles Johnson and Jacob Carbajal were on the receiving ends of the scores for Moorpark (3-5).

A Daniel Pierce 77-yard kickoff return tied the game at 24-24 with 13:27 left in the fourth quarter, but a field goal from Santa Barbara's Jorge Figueroa with 8:39 to play ended up being the game-winning score.

Moorpark will play its season finale on Nov. 13 at Antelope Valley College at 2 p.m.
