Baseball splits double-header with Ventura

On Thursday the Raiders hosted cross county rival and came away with a split, winning game one, 3-2 and droppimg game 2 by a score of 10-1.

In game 1, freshman RH Garrett Yawn took the mound in his first college start. The nerves showed up early as he hit the first batter he faced. Ventura was able to load the bases and with two hits and 2 sac flys, Ventura had their two runs. Yawn settled down and scattered 2 more hits over the next three innings.

The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Spencer Perry was hit by a pitch and with E1 advanced to second. Padan Riley grounded out to advance Perry to third. Dylan Leek hit a grounder and VC shortstop couldn't set his feet and underthrew first scoring Perry making the score 2-1 VC

In the top of the sixth, Trevor Sieger allowed a hit but got the next two batters. In the bottom of the sixth, Alex Vega, Albert Prado, and Daniel Jaggard singled to load the bases. With the VC infield playing in, Perry hit into a fielders choice, with Vega being thrown out at home. Nate Martinez's SAC fly scored Prado to tie the game.

Both teams left the winning runs stranded in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the ninth, Raider pitcher Rocco Aremeni came in and faced six batters but held VC off the board. First batter Dylan Swanson singled, Conner Whitcomb sac bunted to push Swanson to second. Trent Packard walked and next batter Shane Greiger was intentionally walked to load the bases and give VC options. Vega RBI single to right scores Swanson to end the game.

In Game 2, Raider starting pitcher DJ Virgini struggled over 2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 5 runs. Raider pitching allowed 5 more runs over the next 5 innings and the Raider offense was quiet the rest of the afternoon.

The Raiders will travel to Bakersfield on April 22nd for a doubleheader.
