Sophia Cortina wins women's cross country state title
Sophia Cortina, who took 4th-place in 2018, won the state championship by five seconds over the weekend in 18 minutes, 27.6 minutes. According to Cortina, the last 200 meters were the most crucial - she went for it.
Cortina is the first-ever female cross country state champion in Moorpark College history.
Her hard work paid off as she was able to run away to the victory stand. This outstanding performance led the Raiders to a 9th-place state finish. Natalie Anyilian was the second Raider to finish in a time of 20:11.1. Freshman Andriana Perez placed 64th, while freshman Estfanie De Los Santos placed 84th in 21:09.9. Finishing the scoring were two more freshmen, Venus Venegas (21:37.9) while Elizabeth Hsu (21:51).
Men's Cross Country
Freshman Drake Nienow placed 5th, anchoring the men's 8th-place finish in 20:48.8 over the 4-mile course. Sophomores Andrew Teasdale came in 26th place in 21:40, while Robby Riggs was 54th in 21:57.8.
Hot on his heels was freshman Zac Leith placing 55th in 21:57.8. The difference between Riggs and Leith was the sophomore Riggs leaned his chest over the finish line first. Connor Ahi came in 106th out of 178 runners in a tie of 22:41.4.
