#6 Men's Volleyball takes down #1 Orange Coast in epic 5 game battle to go 3-0 on the week.
The #6 Men's Volleyball team had a busy week hosting #1 and defending state champion Orange Coast and followed that up welcoming Grossmont and Palomar along with Santa Barbara for a quad event.
The back to back State Champions Orange Coast came into Raiders Pavilion sporting a 5-0 record, a 20-0 2024 campaign and a 31 game winning streak and the Raiders were prepared.
The Raiders took the opening game 25-23. The game went back and forth and would set the tone for the night. When it looked like either team would take control and pull away, the other team fought back as in the case in game 1. With the 23-23, the Raiders got the advantage and scored the winning point on a Pirate hitting error.
Game 2 the Pirates looked to settle down and controlled and pulled away from the Raiders, 25-19.
Game 3 went to the Raiders 25-22. The Raider's used a some blocking to gain control of the game up by 6 at one point. The Pirates would cut into the lead but hitting mistakes and time would give the Raiders the set.
Up 2-1, the Raiders had their chances to put the Pirates away but service and hitting errors would cost the Raiders late in the game. It was tied 21-21 but a service error, long hit and OCC spike spelled doom, 21-25. 2-2
Onto game 5 and this where the fun begins. The Raiders opened game 5 up 4-0. The Pirates came back to tie it. Neither team would lead by more than two points.
With the score at 13-14, the Raiders got a touch call to tie it, 14-14. From that point on the Pirates had 6 match point serves while Raiders had 7. Game 5 would go to 32-32. The Raiders used a long Pirate ball and a touch call to get the final two points, 34-32.
Jacob Knudsen had 27 kills. Tyler Linville added 17 kills with 6 digs. Ryan Ferguson had 49 assists and 6 digs. Taylor Phipps and Benjamin Greenberg each had 8 kills.
The following day, the Raiders took down Grossmont in 4 and swept Palomar, 3-0.
