Football's comeback falls short at Hancock as 2pt conversion to win game fails
The #24 Football team continued their grueling National North schedule as they traveled to Santa Maria to take on #19 Hancock in their on campus stadium. Both teams entered the game 2-2 and having lost two in a row, hoping to end the streak.
As it has been for the Raiders all year, they take the early lead and it was no different in the opening quarter. Kadyn Parr found Corbin Hale on a quick slant and Hale took it to the house. 7-0 Raiders. However the Bulldogs came right back to tie the score 4 minutes later. 7-7 8:35 1stQ. On their very next possession, Parr led the Raiders on a 6 play, 70 yard drive to re-take the lead when Parr found DJ James crossing across the goal line. 14-7 5:18 left in the 1st quarter. Hancock wasted no time tying the game and it looked the game would be pass vs run shoot-out. 14-14 after 1 quarter.
In the second quarter both teams seemed to settle down. The Raiders defense found their footing and Hancock made their defensive adjustments. The Raiders would score once more but the PAT kick missed. Hancock scored with 17 seconds left in the half and with their made PAT took a 21-20 halftime lead.
In the 3rd, Hancock added a rushing TD to extend their lead to 28-20 going into the 4th.
In the 4th, Hancock added another rushing score at the beginning of the quarter to make it 35-20. 11 minutes left. The Raiders next drive stalled at the Hancock 25 and turned the ball over on downs. Hancock tried running out the clock out but the Raiders knew what was coming. After a first down, the Raiders were able to force a Bulldog punt getting the ball back with 3:37 left in the game. The Raiders only two and a half minutes and scored after the 2:00 time-out. Parr found a streaking Dameian Hernandez for a 31 TD pass. Parr found Ryan Johnson in the back of the endzone and Johnson made an athletic move over the defender for the two point conversion. 28-35, 1:57 left. Everyone in the stadium knew what was next and the Raiders executed a perfect onside kick they were in business. An 8 yard pass to James plus a pass interference moved the ball to the Hancock 40. Parr then found Hale again on the slant and Hale took it to the 20. After a dropped ball by Hale, a Parr pass completion to Stanley Rouaud for 19 yards looked like a TD but Rouaud was stopped just short of the goal line. Luke Rassmussen was brought in and the Raiders called the Tush Push for a 1 yard TD. 34-35 :56 left. The Raiders opted to go for the win and avoid OT but Parr's pass to Johnson was picked off in the endzone. Final, 34-35.
The Raiders have dropped three in a row now and will rest up for a week before having to to face Ventura, Saturday, October 19th. 6p at the football stadium.
