The newly named #20 Raiders hosted Orange Coast College in their home opener and came away with a 28-26 victory. With the win, the Raiders opened their season at 2-0 first time since 2006, when they won thier last WSC Conference championship before the birth of the SCFA.
With last week's offensive slow start, Coach Mike Stuart knew the offense would have to come out and make a statement to keep the pressure off the defense.
The Pirates took the opening kick and the Raiders defense did their job holding Orange Coast to a 3 and out. After the punt, the Raiders started their first drive on the 25 yard line. Kadyn Parr dissected the Pirate defense, guiding the Raiders to a 10 play 75 yard opening drive touchdown. The key play was a 4th and 3 at midfield and Parr found a streaking DJ James who made a spectacular one handed grab. Ryan Yenokian scored a 1 yard plunge. 7-0, 9 minutes in 1st qaurter. Orange Coast moved the ball down the field but the drive stalled and their field goal attempt sailed wide left. On the Raiders next drive, Parr drove the Raiders 80 yards in 5 plays with the key play was a 46 yard pass to Corbin Hale. Hale caught the ball and dodged the OCC defensive player and ended up at the OCC 31 yard line. After two incompletions and 2 Pirate penalties, Parr found Hale sitting in the ednzone for a 16 yard grab. A missed PAT made the score 13-0 after one.
The second quarter saw both offenses struggling to move the ball but it was Orange Coast that came away with 2 field goals. The Raiders had a chance to add to thier point total but a 45 yard field attempt sailed wide right, 13-6 Raiders leading at the half.
The third quarter started like the 2nd quarter with both offenses struggling. On thier second possesion of the half, Orange Coast facing a 4th and 2 on thier 34 yard line decided to go for it and the Raider defense turned it into a 19 yard loss. 1st and 10 at the Orange Coast 15 and the Raiders were in business. After a 7 yard Dameian Hernandez rush, Parr kept it for a 8 yard TD. PAT good, 20-6. The Pirates responded with a 50 yard kick-off return and scored 5 plays later. The PAT was blocked by Nolan Story, 20-12 Raiders with 1:45 left in the 3rd. The Pirates forced a Raider 3 and out and the Pirates started with 52 seconds left in the 3rd.
The Pirates started the 4th driving the ball 40 yards for a 5 yard score, 20-18. The Pirate's 2pt conversion failed. The Raider offense sputtered again having to punt the ball away. With their next possesion, the Pirates started making plays but for the second week in a row, the Raiders defense came up big with a forced fumble by Vance Harris. With 5 minutes left, Parr and the Raiders offense came to life. Parr 13 yard pass to Ryan Johnson. Parr 31 yard pass to Hale and finally a 32 yard Parr TD pass to Jacob Stewart. Parr scored the 2pt conversion, 28-18 Raiders, 2:18 left. A unsportsmanlike penalty for excessive celebration meant the kick-off spot was pushed to the 20 yard line. Orange Coast took advantage of the short field and scored with :10 left, 2pt conversion good, 28-26 Raiders.
Defensively, Nolan Story led the defense with 25 tackled, a SAC, fumble recovery and an interception. Vance HArris had 8 tackles with a forced fumble.
The Raiders will be on the road this Saturday to take on Mt San Jacinto, 9/21 at 6p
