Football gets defensive, play spoiler in their season opening win over Palomar, 17-16

It was supposed to be somewhat of a homecoming for Palomar, playing their first on campus home game in school history, as they opened their brand new $28 milion on campus stadium. The Raiders had other plans as they forced 4 turnovers and scored 14 points in the final 9 minutes to spoil the Comet party.

The Raiders scored first on Will Struyk 45 yard field goal with 6:25 left. From there, Palomar outscored the Raiders 16-0 to take a 16-3 with 9:10 left in the game. After the last Comet score, the Raiders went 3 and to give the ball back to Palomar. The Comets were driving, looking to put the game away, when the Raiders defense forced a fumble and Jadon Lemmons scoped up the ball and ran it back for a 76 yard touchdown return. PAT was good, 16-10 Raiders trailing. Two possesions later, Kadyn Parr got the offense going and he found TE Ryan Johnson in the back of the endzone for a 5 yard TD catch. PAT good 17-16, Raiders with 2:55 left. The Raiders got their fourth turnover in the form of a AJ Scurlock interception. The Raiders were able to covert a 3rd down with 1:28 left to close out the game.

Meyer was 4-14 passing for 44 yards. DJ James was the leading receiver with 4 catches. For the game, the Raiders ended up with 148 total yards, 84 through the air and 64 on the ground.
