Men's and #4 Women's Basketball teams ready to open defense of their WSC North crowns
With the non-conference schedule behind them, both the Men's and Women's Basketball teams are set to open defense of the WSC North Conference crowns. The Men will be going for their second straight title while the #4 Women will going for a 6th straight title.
The #4 Women opened their season 0-3 against #1 College of the Sequioas, #2 Mt SAC, and #3 Orange Coast but reeled off 7 straight wins before losing to Sequioas at the Tommy Arellano North/South Showcase. Since then, the Raiders have won 5 straight to run their overall record to 12-4 going into their conference opener against Santa Barbara.
Fr. Marianne Boco from Granada Hills Charter has emerged as the Raider's offensive go to person. However, opponnetts will still have to contend with All-WSC and All- State So. Mika Jarrett, Fr. Mikayla Oliver from Oxnard HS, the Lising Twins, Hannah and Heart, Freshmen from Poly HS, and Alyssa Saldana, Fr. from Chaminade HS on the outside.
The Raiders are also prepared on the inside with Sophomores Angelina Santana, Oxnard HS and Genesis Gonzalez, Canyon HS. Princess Byrd, So. from Lincoln HS and Maleyni Tolliver will help bolster the paint.
The Raiders have a new member in the conference, Mission College which has replaced Pierce for the the time being. The outlook looks bright for a 6th straight title but teams will be inspired nightly to take out the champs and the Raiders will need to be ready and fight off the mental lapses that have slowed them at times.
The Raider Men started the season off 2-0 getting their second win against the 2023-24 defending State Champ West Valley which broke the Viking's 34 game win streak. After the West Valley win, the Raiders would go on to 5 game losing streak, with 3 of those losses coming to teams ranked in the the top 10. With their record sitting at 2-5, the Raiders went on to win the Grossmont Tournament, with the marquee win against perennial state power San Diego City in the championship game. The Raiders came home and defeated Cerro Coso, Bakersfield, and went on the the road to defeat LA City for their 6th straight win. Right before Christmas, the Raiders extended their streak to eight, defeating Mira Costa and Miramar Colleges at the Pete Adelman Classic. After the holidays, the Raiders concluded their non-conference schedule with a loss to Citrus to snap the 8 game win streak.
The Raiders will enter conference action with a 10-6 overall record and the 10th rated Winning Percentage index in the South.
The Raiders are led by So. Jordan Torres, So. Reese Widerburg, So. Dashaun Warren and Fr. Isaiah Sherrard. If those four are not getting it done, there is So. Kenji Cooper, So. Chase Aronowitz, Fr. Justin Renerand So. Dominck Contrearas
The WSC North, as always will be a toss up with every night being a battle. The Raiders will have their hands full this time around and will need a consistant effort every night if they want to repeat. Oxnard has emerged as a contender and throw their hat into the fray along with the usual contenders Cuesta, Hancock and Ventura.
